- 301works Picking Up Steam After the Tr.im Incident
The recent news surrounding the Tr.im closure had quite a few worried about the future of their shortened links. While millions of links are shared using this type of services every day there is no guarantee that the links will still work tomorrow or next year. Fortunately, in light of the concerns raised, some URL shortening services are now banding together to provide an independent archive of the links to ensure they survive if services close or go down at some point. “Leading Internet software companies have joined together to launch an independent URL mapping directory service. The new service will allow all participating short URL providers the ability to make their mappings available as regular updates or as a historical archive through the directory,” the announcement reads. “Once launched the service will be available at 301works.org and will be managed and run by Gnip, Inc. while the participating companies work to identify an appropriate non-profit organization to manage the directory long-term.” The project was in fact first proposed in April by the market leader Bit.ly, which created 301works as the equivalent for archive.org for shortened links. - Pirate Party UK Gets Official Registration
The Pirate Party, a political organization fighting for copyright and patent law reform, is going from strength to strength having secured a seat in the European Parliament and the German one. Now the organization is announcing that it is an officially registered political party in the UK, having been recognized by the UK Electoral Commission earlier this week. “Enthusiastic support for the party has, up to now, sometimes blinded us to the fundamental truth: there was no party. The Pirate Party UK existed only as an idea. But now it is real, and here to stay for as long as it is needed. At the end of last month, the Electoral Commission confirmed the registration,” the Pirate Party's newly set-up UK web site reads. “The paperwork is done. The website has been developed. [...] We have put the legal and banking necessities in place. Now the party needs you.“ The party is very much in its infancy in the country but has seen growing support up till now, in tune with the rest of Europe where similar branches are starting to pop up. UK's Pirate Party can now raise funds and have candidates for the next general election in the country. The party will campaign for new patent and copyright laws that are more in tune with the state of the Internet and the needs and wishes of the people.

Messenger friends, even if they aren’t following you? The updates feature in Yahoo! Messenger 9.0 allows you to share updates from a variety of outside sites and services with your Yahoo! Friends,” Sarah Bacon, product manager, wrote. “When you elect to share your latest Twitter tweets with anyone, friends that have you on their Messenger contact list will be able to see them.” Enabling the functionality is simple enough. Users have to first link their Twitter account to their Yahoo Profile by visiting the Share More page. Once there all they have to do is fill out their account name in the Twitter section and Yahoo takes care of the rest. By default anyone on Yahoo and all of their contacts will now be able to see the Twitter updates and they will show up as the users' status messages with a detailed view available when viewing the contact details.
